Hemorrhoids Relief at Home
Hemorrhoids bother about 89% of all Americans at some time in their lives. Treatment can vary depending on the severity of the problem. Surgery and other medical treatment is not required most of the time unless the hemorrhoids are very large and painful. Let us explore the different treatments that can be performed at home for hemorrhoids relief.
1. It is recommended to take warm sitz bath 3 times a day and after each bowel movement for at least 15-20 minutes. This bath requires you to soak only the hips and buttocks in warm water. Add Epsom salt to water to help relieve inflammation. After the bath, thoroughly dry the rectal area to prevent rubbing which can torn the skin further.
2. Avoid straining during bowel movement or sitting for a prolonged period of time.
3. Another treatment to consider is changing your diet. Drink more liquids and eat high fiber foods like bran, fresh fruits, and vegetables to make stools softer and reduce constipation.
4. Stool softeners might also help but be cautious in choosing a laxative to use. If you get runny stools, then laxatives should not be used because it might cause infection.
5. Applying cold compress or icepack to the anal area might help relieve the pain.
6. Over the counter medications including creams, ointments and suppositories are available that are sold as medicines for hemorrhoids. Wipes containing witch hazel or other anti-inflammatory agents can help reduce pain and swelling. Creams and ointments are used to treat external hemorrhoids which are sticking out from the anus. On the other hand, suppositories are tablets that are pushed inside where they dissolve to treat internal hemorrhoids.
7. Use moist baby wipes or cotton cloth after each bowel movement to prevent skin irritation. Just be sure to wipe gently to avoid irritating your skin further.
Hemorrhoid treatment can be done at home using simple yet effective methods. A simple sitz bath or changing your diet can help you achieve hemorrhoid relief at home.
